Free Online C++ Tutorials

Looking for free online C++ tutorials? Or free online C tutorials? (Or other such free online documentation on C/C++?) This page contains some links to free electronic documentation, guides, tutorials, references, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), books (ebooks) on C, C++ and the Standard Template Library (STL). The various free documentation often come either as browsable web based HTML documents, PDF files (which can be read using any of the freely available PDF viewers), or PS (PostScript) files. While some must be read online, others allow you to download a set to your computer for offline reading.

This online book, by Bruno R. Preiss, on data structures and algorithms, deals with data types and abstraction, stacks, queues, deques, ordered lists and sorted lists, hashing, hash tables, scatter tables, trees, search trees, heaps, priority queues, sets, multisets and partitions, dynamic storage allocation, sorting algorithms, graph algorithms, etc. The source code for the examples may also be downloaded from the site.

This book, published originally by Cambridge University Press, is now available in PDF as well as PostScript. (Unfortunately, each chapter of the book must be downloaded as a separate PDF file, negating the value of using PDF as a distribution format.)

Learn how to optimize your C++ program with this free online book.

This online book is designed for someone with previous programming experience, although the newcomer will not be entirely lost if he/she puts in some effort (or so the site seems to say).

This online book (available in both PDF and HTML formats) criticizes the flaws in both C++ and C.

This book, published by Macmillan, is now available online. As is obvious from the title, it's a beginner's guide to C++ for users of Visual C++ 5.

This is an abbreviated version of the 1992 book on C. Both HTML and PDF versions are available.

Need to know the differences between C and C++? This document compares the differences between C++ (as ratified by ISO in 1998) and the various standards specifying the C programming language (including the latest version of C as ratified by ISO in 1999). It's a fairly detailed document and definitely worth a look for those programming in C and C++.

Bruce Eckel's book "Thinking in C++" is available online, free of charge, from his website in both HTML or PDF format. Volume 1 is the same as the printed version available from Prentice Hall. Volume 2 can only be obtained online at present.

This is the online C++ Programming Howto guide - learn how to avoid memory problems in C++ and write programs in C++. Applies to Windows, Linux, MSDOS, BeOS, Macintosh, VAX VMS, MVS, AS/400, Solaris, HP/UX, etc, etc ("all operating systems" claims the author).

You can get a free online web-based C++ Tutorial on this site, that will apparently be published later in 2000. The site also has a number of other useful free online tutorials and information for programmers.

You can download Postscript versions of this draft version of a book designed for an introductory computer science course in Australia. The electronic book is designed for newcomers to C++ wishing to learn the C++ programming language. If you need a free Postscript viewer, you might want to try Ghostview.

A good online tutorial on C++ that assumes you are already a C programmer so it doesn't start from ground zero. You can download the entire annotations in various text formats too.

Zero-Day Exploit

Zero-Day Exploit: Countdown to Darkness

 Countdown to Darkness

There exists a 0-day vulnerability in a particular line of SCADA Master products that are widely used in petrochemical facilities. Furthermore, since the telemetry between the Master and the RTUs (the units located at valves, gauges, etc.) is particularly fragile under attack, the attackers are able to take a two-tiered approach to the damage they cause. The vulnerability is designed to simply replace a small bit of code in the SCADA Master so that upon communication with the RTUs, it will unpredictably send invalid data; the way in which the communications are invalid also varies somewhat. The symptoms of this appear not at the Master level, but in the RTUs themselves, which have unpredictable results. The first set of disasters occur as valves fail to close or open, or particular RTUs cease providing data. It takes a bit of time for law enforcement to have a solid handle on things, as they are currently battling their own issues, but they notice the pattern. The SCADA systems are immediately segmented from other networks, and work begins on replacing RTUs. This, however, has no effect, and as time passes the ripples of the attack spread. Gas stations run out of gas, followed shortly by freight carriers. Private individuals and local police and fire departments are not far behind. Disaster can only be prevented by Reuben, an elite cyber-security researcher who stumbles across the plot while contracting for the federal government.

How to Be Invisible

How to Be Invisible

The Essential Guide to Protecting Your Personal Privacy, Your Assets, and Your Life Revised Edition

It's hard to say how private investigators would react to books like J. J. Luna's How to Be Invisible--while it makes their jobs a lot harder, most of them are paid by the hour. If you want to withdraw from the snooping eyes of the government, corporations, stalking ex-boyfriends, or practically anyone else, this practical, down-to-earth guide will help you and your family vanish. It's not a glamorous James Bond life Mr. Luna is inviting you to take part in; it's probably much like the life you're living right now. Spending much of the early part of the book frightening the reader with tales of stalkers and mistaken identities, the author successfully makes his case that a few adjustments to an individual's personal information flow can make a life-or-death difference. While getting his plan off the ground will take a bit of planning and effort (you have to move at least once to clear your trail), it is sustainable and worthwhile even for those who think they have nothing to hide. Learn about anonymous travel and purchase, using trusts and corporations to keep your assets private, and how recent laws (the book's date of publication is 2000) significantly affect older methods of guaranteeing privacy. Luna makes no claim to know the law where you live and suggests that you consult a trusted local attorney before implementing most of his advice. Just knowing how easily a criminal can learn about and exploit your personal information will make you want to do just that. --Rob Lightner
